Winning the Dieline Packaging Design Awards 2013 for Sustainable Packaging, they are at it again with 5 other creations including Basmati rice, Olive oil, Raspberry smoothie, Microgarden, and the Self-opening food package. This is the new generation of sustainable package design, using materials that are both smart and environmentally friendly. At Pinch, Bob notoriously teases me for having a “PP problem.” No, it’s not what you’re thinking…. So this month we want to highlight Tomorrow Machine, a Swedish design studio based in Stockholm & Paris that specializes in package product and food concepts.
The designers specified a marbling technique to decorate the cup, selecting a cobalt blue reminiscent of the glaze used on traditional porcelain and ceramic tableware. “KTH are using a process called Rapid Expansion of Supercritical Solutions to make the surface superhydrophobic,” she said. “A wax is dissolved in carbon dioxide at high pressure and temperature, and then sprayed onto the surface to be treated.” Tomorrow Machine and research company Innventia were asked by the Swedish Forest Industries Federation to envision uses for cellulose harvested from Swedish forests in the year 2035. Myself and Anna Glansén started Tomorrow Machine almost two years ago. We are both product designers and met during our studies in Stockholm, at Beckmans college of Design. We soon discovered that we share the same thoughts about design, and we both believe that design can and will play an important part in shaping a sustainable world for the future. Getting all of this to market is a costly endeavor (Glansén predicts that we’ll see this type of packaging on shelves in five or so years), but one of Tomorrow Machine’s inventions will actually go on sale soon. We realized early on we shared the same values and decided to start a company that could fulfil our vision of how sustainable design can be created in a new way. The Machine is a device that is meant to amplify Roger’s ability to stop time and bring all of the Tomorrow People to the Refuge, a place where the Tomorrow people would no longer fear humans. Other than Roger the only other person able to properly use the machine was his son, Stephen.
